We had a long day. A good day that after 14.5 miles of walking, is ending with sore feet. The way it should be on vacation. Traveling without kids is letting us make those last minute decisions for one more adventure before we head back to rest.
Our day started early. We left at about 6:45 to walk over to the Duomo and grab something to eat before our tour. Finding a place to eat here before 8 is hard. Luckily we found a place in the piazza where we needed to be. It was crazy crowded because it was the only place all of the early tour guests could hit. My crema croissant and cappuccino hit the spot. I think I could have 3 more cappuccinos each day. At home I don’t drink coffee anymore because my old lady stomach doesn’t like it. Here, I’m all in!
The Duomo tour was a bit confusing at first because they told us a different meeting spot than they actually used. We followed the crowd and made it inside. It was beautiful and such an amazing structure to learn the history of.
There were many many steps to go up inside there.
After we climbed up into the dome, we went back down and then headed to the clock tower and went up many, many more steps. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds. The views were amazing. We hit the Duomo museum which had AC and lots of interest the things.
After the Duomo we headed to the Centrale Market and were wowed by the awesome selection of everything from cow stomachs to pesto to Jack fruit.
We had a Michelangelo tour scheduled at The Accademia Gallery next and headed over to grab our tourist gear.
Dorks? Yes. Did we get to stand in front of Michelangelo’s David today? Yes. It was breathtaking. There is something really amazing about experiencing something you have only seen in books or on the computer in person.
We stood at a crossroad between going back to rest and slipping in one more adventure for the day. We are traveling without kids, so we opted for more walking! But first, gelato! Then, over to Pitti Palace to walk around Boboli Gardens. Holy moly. That palace is a palace! We chose not to tour inside, but visited the gardens outside. From the outside, it looks like a very large brick fortress. On the other side of the walls is ginormous sprawling garden.
This was a very hilly garden and by this point in the day, we were at about 18,000 steps and our feet were sore. Time for cheese, bread, olives, and pesto! Then a nap for Brian and some scrolling for me before the evening phase of our day. No dinner for us tonight as our afternoon snack filled us up.
Our nighttime crawl started around 8:30. We are about 25 walking minutes out of the crowded area which we are happy about up until the evening walk when our feet are sore. On our walk back to the center of the action, we found that there was a marathon filling the already crowded streets. Thor streets were roped off and people were shouting and cheering on the runners. It was a pretty exciting addition to the fun. It was also hard to maneuver the streets with. We did it though and found our way to a cannoli and a cafe americano, in the piazza.
It was a long day. Brian is already asleep and since I am a night owl, I am awake at midnight documenting our travels.
Tomorrow we are expecting museums and rain…maybe even some hail. Should be fantastico!
