I’m sitting on our bed in a cute little apartment in Manarola. I can see the ocean from the window and can feel a slight breeze blowing in from the balcony. The bell in the church square just chimed five. I adore the tiny balcony overlooking the stone path that leads up and down this hilly village. We just took a dip in the very salty Mediterranean Sea and are finally going to relax for a bit. Traveling from Hawaii to Italy is no easy feat. It took a couple days of long layovers and overpriced airport food- but we made it.
There is something really weird about traveling without our kids. I find myself constantly saying that Fi would love this or that. Every store I pass has something she would love. Traveling with them has been my favorite adventure. And now, Brian and I can learn how to travel alone again. We can choose a restaurant that doesn’t serve nuggets. We can take two hour naps. Still, my heart aches a little for where travel has taken us as a family.
Today we started in Milan and took a train 3 hours to Monterosso. We checked our bags into a storage area and wandered down the cute little ocean town. It was very hot and pretty packed with people enjoying the sea. We found a great spot for lunch, found a kitty, took some photos, and then hopped on a train to Manarola. We met the nicest woman in the church square who gave us a complete tour of our apartment in her best English. She gave us three candies as an early anniversary gift which was so sweet. After our tour, we headed out to explore.
Tomorrow we hike to somewhere up and over the hill from where we are. I would ask where, but my tired partner is sleeping beside me. After, we will swim in the sea, eat gelato, and unapologetically sleep for hours before another evening adventure.
