We spent the day wandering around Glasgow today. We of course started the day with breakfast to ensure that everyone was happy and ready to put some miles on their feet.
After breakfast we got to meet up with our friend Rachael! She took the train in from England and spent a few hours with us. We have known her family since before she and her sister were born. We have traveled to each other’s houses through the years. I would have loved to see the whole family, but was so happy to have some time with Rachael!
We got some passes for the train and rode to Glasgow University. Brian read that it is the 4th oldest university in the world. It was a very beautiful campus. There were several students taking graduation photos.
After our walk around the University, we got back on the train and headed back to Buchanan Street for some shopping and some lunch. We found the cutest store. Fiona and I could have done some damage there if we weren’t traveling with only carry-on luggage. We grabbed some lunch after popping in and out of a few shops. Today was about 83 degrees which was apparently not the norm. We enjoyed wearing the shorts we brought and getting a rain break. We are headed for some cooler weather so this was a nice little break.
I never took a photo of lunch, but we were fed well. I tried a Halloumi cheese sandwich. It was described to me as being a “squeaky” texture. It totally was. It was good and nice to try something new.
After we said goodbye to Rachael, we grabbed a cold drink and then our tired feet took us the Glasgow Cathedral. Brian chose a drink that we have seen all over here called Irn Bru. He said it tasted like “cream soda with the aftertaste of rust.” He most likely won’t drink another one but wanted to know what the hype was about. He doesn’t get the hype…
All the walking to find out that it closed at 3:30. It was nice to walk there but not my favorite to be denied entrance. Side note: My antibiotics have made me sun sensitive so walking there and frying my scalp was frustrating!
On the walk back to our flat, we stopped by a famous statue. It is the Equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington. This statue is quite funny because there are traffic cones placed on his head and have been there since 1980. I read that any time one has been removed, it was replaced again within a few days.It represents the sense of humor of Glaswegian’s as it started as a late night prank. Banksy has called this his favorite work of art in the UK and inspired him to hold an exhibit at the Gallery of Modern art where this statue resides. The funny thing is is that I knew none of this when we were there and tired Fiona and I couldn’t figure out why Brian was so intent of getting a picture of it. Now I know!
We headed home for a bit of a rest before another outing for dinner. While we rested I had a little MacGyver job I needed to do. This morning while getting ready for the day, my earring fell behind the sink plumbing and my hand didn’t fit. I looked around the place for something to use and opted for a chopstick and a piece of gum. Worked like a charm.
There are lots of places to eat in this area! Brian found a great pasta place, Sugo. Mack opted out of the evening. It was happening in there. We were seated quickly and served quickly. It was really good food. Fi ended the dinner with affogato. Mmmm
It’s time for sleep. The sun goes down so late here that I can’t seem to be ready for bed until after 11. Tomorrow we are up early to pack, rush back to the cathedral to see it at 9, and then an Uber to the airport. We are heading to Belfast and starting our Ireland road trip!
