Raindrops in Edinburgh

Today was a full day of walking in the rain. Funny because yesterday the weather was so nice. We saw the sun yesterday and umbrellas today. It was actually a really nice day of walking even though our toes were a bit wet.

Started the day with a walk through Dean Village in search of some coffee and a bite. We of course saw so many beautiful buildings and so much green.

After breakfast we headed over to Old Town and dodged the drops with many a traveler. We stopped into St. Giles Cathedral for a little rain break and to look at the beautiful architecture. I think many people had the same idea. We had to all leave our umbrellas at the door and I must say I was a bit nervous that we would never see them again. Funny I would worry about a broken, leaky umbrella I found in the flat. My attempt at staying dry. The front of my upper body was dry. At least there was that.

Our wandering around brought us to noon which is when the very popular Makars Mash Bar opens for lunch. You choose the meat and you choose the mash. Brian chose Haggis. Fiona surprised us and chose her first try of lamb. I chose the vegan sausage. Mack went with the tomato soup and a scone because as anyone who travels with kids knows…they don’t eat what they order and you end up eating it. Soup seemed safe and it was a hit! Side note- While we were waiting in line to go inside, I heard someone calling my name and it was a friend from Kauai, Leighton! What a funny surprise. Several years ago I saw a student on the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s a huge, small world.

With full bellies, we headed back through Old Town to Victoria Street. It was adorable and full of other damp people enjoying the inspiration for Diagon Alley. There was much Harry Potter magic if you wanted to wait in line to visit. It was a fun spot to pop in and out of shops. After dragging Brian through the stores, we found a cafe to “relax” at a tiny table just outside the bathroom door. Cute cafe, just crowded. Had a quick cappuccino and headed back toward Dalry for a snooze.

After a long day we were greeted by our door-cat. He sat grumpily on the lawn and greeted us with a cute tongue peep. Fiona tried to say hello, but his hiss made it quite clear that he was serious about his job and wasn’t to be disturbed.

We cooked in tonight and are enjoying a chocolate bar and some quiet after a 10 mile day. It’s a bit rough doing a trip like this with pneumonia. Hoping to get a little more energetic each day and to stop coughing up a lung all the time. Tomorrow we tour Edinburgh Castle. I better stock up on “castle candy” for a certain travel mate who might not be as into the castle as we are. In Cambodia we had “ temple candy”. Works every time.
