Double Hikes and a Mullet

I am pretty tired tonight! Brian and Fiona are already in bed. Mack is up digging in the fridge because she opted out of our afternoon adventure and slept like a teenager…now isn’t tired.

Shall I start with breakfast? We went to Birch yesterday and Fi and I loved it so much, we went back today too! It’s the place! We have also named my new imaginary black kitten Birch as well. You can really see Mack’s enthusiasm for being photographed here.

After breakfast we packed up and headed out for a hike. The Old man of Storr. It was about 15 minutes from Portree where we are staying. Click here if you want to learn more about it! From the parking area, we could see the pinnacles and tiny colorful jackets hiking along. Fi and I knew we were in for it!

It was windy and raining sideways on the way up. You know I was coughing. The funny-not funny part was that I had to pee as well and as any women of a certain age know, that can be tricky. I spent the hike coughing and trying not to pee. Is it too much information, perhaps. Was it a funny way to survive a strenuous hike in the rain? Yes. Fiona and I were the laggers in the group as we trudged along on our ascent cracking up and sharing our bad attitudes about hiking in rain. Mack and Brian were ahead of us and had a way better pace. Fiona decided that our hiking group was like a mullet. Business in front and party in the back. We had a big laugh at that one and yes I had to cross my legs.  When we arrived near the top and then after a final clip the last lookout, we understood the hype. It was really beautiful. It’s like being in another world. A world with an incredible view and no bathrooms .

The way down was dry and it was pretty taxing. Fi and I were happy to see the parking lot grow closer and closer. It was a really nice 2.4 mile hike. Very beautiful. I recommend. Just don’t drink a coffee, have pneumonia, or not use the facilities before you start.

The second activity for the day was a little shopping in Portree. We knew the thrift shop had a 10-3 window so we wanted to make sure to be done, Had some lunch at Mackenzie’s bakery and then made our way through a couple stores. I’m not a big shopper but bought a bar of lemongrass soap and the girls got some things at the charity shop. Brian:Hiking as Annie and Fiona:Thrifting.

After this mini shopping excursion, we went home to rest for exactly 10 minutes before heading out to the Fairy Pool trail. I had to promise Fiona $500 to get her to go. It was a mostly mellow 2.6 mile trail up to where water flows down the hill creating pools along the way. One would want to swim in them if the weather wasn’t 12 degrees (c). This walk was a little underwhelming for me, though beautiful. Brian said that matching Kauai beauty is a big task. This rang true for me on this one. We had a nice time though. Mack stayed home …one might think there was a connection. Not sure.

Time to sleep. Tomorrow we pack up and head to Glasgow. It’s about a 5 hour drive. Brian is a pro now!
