We’re Going On a Coo Hunt

Today was a big travel day. We drove from Isle of Skye to Glasgow which is about a 4.5 hour drive unless  you decide to go out hunting for Highland Coos. Then it takes about 8 hours.

We started the day and Fiona’s fave, Birch. I will spare you pictures of the exact same breakfast. Their overnight oats were so good. Had mango purée on them with a sweet raspberry. So good.

After breakfast, we set out to visit a place where they do tours for Highland Coo sightings. I contacted them yesterday, but was told they were booked. We went anyway because that’s what we do. There was a sweet man in the restaurant who for some reason, gave us the map to where he knew we would see cows. We set the map and off we went.

We passed Eilean Donan castle and stopped for a picture and to use the facilities. We couldn’t go across to look at the castle because we didn’t have tickets. Did some good people watching, snapped a few shots, accidentally insulted someone’s parking job in earshot, and the were back on the road.

We stopped for a quick lunch in cute pub. I say quick because our car rental was due in Glasgow at 5:45 and it was about 12:45. Not much to say about lunch. saw this funny sign outside.

We arrived to the turn off to the glen where we were headed at about 2:30. It was headed out into the middle of nowhere. A few farms and a lot of sketchy one lane roads. Had a couple close calls with blind corners. Brian was able to maneuver around pretty well. We drove and drove. No cows. Sheep, yes. No cows. I started to have this weird feeling that maybe this guy just led us into nowhere like a horror movie with some evil farmer waiting for us. I didn’t share my thoughts with the group. Just hoped all this searching would be fruitful. Near the end of the map route, we started to see lots of poop on the road. Then we saw slots of sheep. It was a little bit anticlimactic after hours of driving. The sheep were cute and all but…

THEN IT HAPPENED! At exactly the end of the route, we started seeing cows everywhere. We saw mamas, bulls, and babies. It was really very adorable and I was so thankful that we didn’t have to turn back disappointed and that we weren’t murdered. I counted 24 coos that I could see. More when we walked around.

Once we had had enough coo time, it was a race to the airport. We were set to arrive at about 5:40. Somehow we did it. A wee bit stressful with traffic circles and Scottish signage.

Now we are in Glasgow and back in the thick of it. Quite a change from quiet Portree. Got an amazing flat for a couple of days. Had a tasty dinner at the Fat Rhino. They had a funny vegan offering on their menu.  Tomorrow we will meet up with a family friend and take a break from hiking. Well, in the hills anyway. We will be doing some store hiking I’m sure.
